Compliance Manager Property Management

We are looking for a Compliance Manager who is meticulous and knowledgeable in the Real Estate/Property Management world. 

The Opportunity

As our Compliance Manager, you will play a critical role in safeguarding our operations and reputation. You will be the company's subject-matter expert on the complex web of regulations governing California's rental housing market. This role includes a primary work location at the corporate office in Los Angeles, CA with essential travel to our properties to ensure policies are effectively implemented and understood.

What You'll Do (Required Key Responsibilities)

  • Regulatory Monitoring & Implementation: Proactively monitor, interpret, and analyze federal, state, and local laws (Fair Housing, landlord-tenant, data privacy, habitability, etc.). You will translate new legislation into actionable operational policies and procedures.
  • Policy Governance: Develop, implement, and continuously refine a robust, company-wide compliance framework. You will be the author and owner of our compliance-related policies and best practices.
  • Compliance Audits & Document Control: Design and execute a comprehensive internal audit program to assess compliance at the property level. You will oversee the review and approval of lease agreements, addenda, and resident communications to ensure legal fortitude.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify potential compliance vulnerabilities across the portfolio and partner with operational leaders to develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies.
  • Training & Development: Design and deliver engaging and impactful training programs for on-site teams, Regional Directors, and corporate staff. Your goal is to cultivate a pervasive culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
  • Issue Resolution & Guidance: Serve as the primary resource for complex compliance-related inquiries. Provide expert guidance and clear solutions to property and regional leadership, acting as a key partner to our legal counsel and insurance providers.
  • Vendor & Data Management: Establish and monitor vendor compliance requirements (e.g., insurance, licensing). Oversee data management practices to ensure the secure and compliant handling of all resident and company information.

What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in multifamily property management, with at least 5 years in a role heavily focused on compliance, legal, or risk management.
  • Expert-level, demonstrated knowledge of California landlord-tenant law, Fair Housing regulations (FEHA & FHA), and other regulations pertinent to market-rate residential properties.
  • Proven success in developing, implementing, and enforcing compliance programs across a multi-site portfolio.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex legal information for all organizational levels.
  • Must be able to work independently, manage multiple high-priority projects, and meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to travel within California as needed.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Legal Studies, Real Estate, or a related field.
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school is a significant advantage.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP), Certified Property Manager (CPM), or California-specific Fair Housing certifications.
  • Proficiency with modern property management software (e.g., Yardi, RealPage, AppFolio, and compliance tracking systems.
